Dr. Simin Liu, MD, ScD, Professor of Epidemiology, was awarded the Functional Genomics and Translational Biology Mentoring Award by the American Heart Association at their annual meeting. The award recognizes “an accomplished scientist that goes above and beyond to mentor well-trained and well-rounded individuals with a passion for science.”
Caroline Kuo, DPhil, Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences, has been appointed as the inaugural Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Public Health. The creation of a leadership position to manage, coordinate, and centralize diversity and inclusion efforts within the School of Public Health was a major priority of the School’s Diversity and Inclusion Plan. Kuo’s main goals are to recruit more faculty members from historically underrepresented groups, as well as more women faculty members, and to build an environment where faculty members “are thriving and supported,” she said. She also hopes to create a more inclusive environment for students by establishing a peer mentoring program, attracting more students from historically underrepresented groups, and facilitating a feedback system for students to communicate with faculty members.
Joseph W. Hogan, ScD has been appointed chair of the Department of Biostatistics. Hogan came to Brown in 1995 after completing his doctoral work at Harvard. His research focuses on the development of statistical methods for missing data, causal inference and sensitivity analysis, with focus on applications in HIV, global health and behavioral sciences. Professor Hogan will succeed Constantine A. Gatsonis, PhD, the inaugural chair of the Department. Longtime public health colleague Vince Mor said “Constantine was the biggest advocate of the creation of a School of Public Health and for the establishment of an academic Department of Biostatistics. He built the infrastructure, hired the faculty, set up the graduate programs and expanded the agenda of biostatistics at Brown such that the young department is on everyone’s radar as a high quality place for advancing the science of biostatistics.” Professor Hogan will take the helm of the Department in July. Professor Gatsonis will continue as Director of the Center for Statistical Sciences.
