Course Highlight: Pandemic Game Changers

PHP 1580, Pandemic Game Changers, is a course that prepares the next generation of decision-makers for emerging biosecurity threats.

The field of biosecurity is constantly evolving. As nations across the globe become increasingly interconnected, the risks posed by biological threats continue to rise. With threats like mpox in Democratic Republic of the Congo and avian flu spreading in livestock across the United States, the need for skilled public health decision-makers has never been greater. Taught by biosecurity veterans Beth Cameron and Wilmot James, a new course at Brown, PHP 1580 Pandemic Game Changers, trains students to understand the key elements of pandemic policy implementation amid ongoing challenges and fast-moving information.

“The field of global health security is full of energy,” says Beth Cameron, professor of the practice of health services, policy and practice and senior adviser to Brown’s Pandemic Center. “Pandemics like COVID-19 can upend our world, polarize our society and isolate countries. But Game Changers goes beyond public health threats and teaches students how to anticipate emergencies, brief decision-makers, build global teams and make changes so that all countries are better prepared.”

Pandemic Game Changers uses a combination of practical experience, scenario analysis and policy examination to teach students to navigate the rapidly-changing situations that arise in the field of biosecurity. The course also addresses the long-term implications of health policy on a global scale. Mimi Haripottawekul ’24 took PHP 1580 last spring and was impressed by the practical approach of the course material.

“The projects taught me how to think with the mindset of someone who may actually be making these decisions,” she says. “Instead of passively learning about real-world situations, this course pushed us to actively engage with them. By teaching us how to analyze health crises, identify key issues and propose actionable solutions, it equipped me with practical skills that are crucial in public health.”

For Cameron, the course is an opportunity to help guide the public health thought leaders of tomorrow. “Pandemic Game Changers are students who are interested in learning how to be a policy- or decision-maker,” she says. “They are future national and global leaders who want to make an impact.”
