Ten on the 10s: Nathaniel Fuchs MPH’20

In celebration of Brown SPH’s 10th Anniversary, we’re featuring an alum on the 10th of each month who is advancing public health in Rhode Island.

Nathaniel Fuchs MPH’20 is a senior public health epidemiologist at the Rhode Island Department of Health where he works in the substance use epidemiology program tracking non-fatal opioid overdoses in the state. We asked Nathaniel how his MPH training in the Brown School of Public Health has shaped her career.

How does your Brown training impact your work?

From the COVID-19 outbreak to the ongoing opioid overdose crisis, my training at Brown prepared me to work through the heights of Rhode Island’s two most substantial epidemics. Specifically, having an analytical framework and being able to problem solve were critical skill sets I further developed through the MPH program.

What are your thoughts about the School at this important 10-year milestone?

Brown established itself as a community-based research institution long before there was a school of public health. I think the 10-year anniversary marks a continuation and exponential expansion of that legacy. I’ve continued to be impressed by the extraordinary work that Brown does in the Rhode Island community and across the globe.

What’s your advice for aspiring public health professionals?

Set and maintain boundaries.  Both your mental and physical health should always remain as your first priority—especially when entering into difficult situations such as outbreaks or an epidemic response.
