Brown Undergraduate Journal of Public Health Releases Inaugural Issue

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University School of Public Health] — The Brown Undergraduate Journal of Public Health has released its inaugural issue, featuring original articles by Brown undergraduates relevant to the field of public health.

Led by co-editors-in-chief Madeline Noh ’22 and Grace Reed ’22, both public health concentrators, the student-run Journal’s first issue features eleven articles selected after a comprehensive, multi-stage peer review process.

“The articles published in this issue explore an impressive variety of perspectives, populations, and disparities in public health,” Noh and Reed said. “While the authors all took unique approaches in their work, a focus on inequity as a whole is sustained through coverage of topics including the health of racial/ethnic minority women, the impact of COVID-19 on resource shortages, challenges in mental health care, and the impacts of the criminal justice system on public health.”

Submissions to the Brown Undergraduate Journal of Public Health (BUJPH) came from academic coursework, professional experiences, and personal research, and included literature reviews, systematic reviews, as well as social commentary related to the field of public health.

Conceived by Noh and Reed to fill a need they saw at Brown for more spaces supporting undergrads interested in exploring the research and publishing process for the first time, the BUJPH serves as a platform for diverse undergraduate perspectives on public health topics and gives Brown students an opportunity to contribute to the local, national, and global dialogue on a wide range of public health issues.

“Getting work published is a goal that can seem out of reach and overwhelming for undergrads just starting out in academia,” Reed said. “We want the journal to be a place for students to get experience preparing their work for publication while learning from collaboration with other students and faculty mentors in the process.”

“We want to foster a sense of discussion and curiosity towards public health issues,” Noh said. “We believe that health and its politics underlie all aspects of our lives, making these discussions relevant and important across the Brown community.”

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The call for submissions for the Spring 2022 issue of the BUJPH is currently open. Submissions are welcome through the BUJPH Submission Form. See the BUJPH website for more details and complete submission guidelines. Noh and Reed encourage all undergraduate students to submit their work.

BUJPH advisor, Patricia Risica, associate professor of behavioral and social sciences and director of undergraduate studies for public health, said “This is a great opportunity for students to share their work with the Brown community and become involved with our journal process. We are also looking for new members to join our team and contribute their initiative, effort, and leadership.” Applications for reviewing, editing, and E-Board positions will be released this semester.

In addition to a team of 30 undergraduate reviewers, editors, and executive board members, the BUJPH is supported by advisor Professor Patricia Risica as well as the Public Health DUG, and the SPH communications team.
