I chose Brown because I wanted to challenge myself in an environment that combines rigorous research with real-world impact. I value the opportunity to have the ability to put into practice what is learned in the classroom, and to do so with faculty members who bring diverse, real world experience across the public health space. Ultimately, I chose Brown because I believed it would prepare me best for my career goals not only academically, but also professionally, by providing hands-on opportunities that equip me to make a meaningful impact in public health.
What sets Brown apart is the opportunity to learn directly from faculty who are not only researchers but also practitioners influencing real-world public health. Because of the tight knit public health space providence has to offer, I have the chance to engage closely with policy and advocacy efforts. For someone like me, who is interested in developing evidence-based policies to improve access to care, Brown offers both the practical tools and the network to make a measurable impact.
I love that students have opportunities to work with a diverse portfolio of stakeholders and community organizations, and see the direct impact of their work. The interdisciplinary environment, where faculty and peers bring diverse expertise to solving intricate public health challenges, makes learning dynamic. It’s energizing to be part of a program that not only teaches theory but actively prepares students to lead change in the field.
My academic area of interest is health policy. Growing up in rural Alabama, I witnessed firsthand how systemic barriers prevent marginalized communities from benefiting from medical advances. Experiences in medical research and clinical care revealed that innovation alone cannot improve health outcomes without equitable systems of access. This realization inspired me to pursue public health and law, aiming to dismantle structural inequities, and ensure that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, for all communities.
After completing my MPH at Brown, I plan to attend law school to gain the legal expertise necessary to address structural inequities in healthcare. Ultimately, I aim to work at the intersection of health law and policy, advocating for a more equitable health system.
Providence offers a close-knit and collaborative environment that makes it easy to engage with the local community and take full advantage of the resources the School of Public Health provides. Its size allows for meaningful connections with faculty, peers, and community partners, creating opportunities for hands-on learning and real-world impact. For me, Providence is an ideal setting to grow academically, professionally, and personally while contributing to projects that improve health and well-being.
My advice to a prospective applicant is to have an open mind to the wealth of opportunities that may be available. The program encourages exploration, so come in open to opportunities beyond your original plan. Some of the most rewarding experiences come from unexpected courses, projects, or faculty connections.
