Biography

Why did you choose the Brown University School of Public Health?

I chose Brown University School of Public Health (Brown SPH) because of the abundance of opportunities and the commitment to health equity. I knew that I would be able to integrate my passion for health equity inside and outside the classroom by becoming a student here.

What makes Brown's program different from other programs you considered?

Being a part of the Health Equity Scholar's (HES) program and the positive environment at the Brown SPH has been the biggest difference for me. Through HES and my classes, I have had the amazing opportunity to build strong connections with like-minded peers. I cannot express how impactful the support of my peers and faculty has been on my success in this program.

What do you enjoy most about your program?

Brown has provided me with an environment to further develop my passion and leadership skills in ways I hadn't imagined. There are so many resources that help students flourish academically, professionally, and personally.

What is your academic area of interest and why?

I am interested in qualitative research that provides a place for underrepresented populations to tell their story. I hope to continuously represent the authentic stories of different populations through high-quality research. It is so important to represent the experience of individuals in addition to their subsequent health outcomes. My research has explored the experience of African American and Caribbean American mothers with maternal and child health care in the U.S. There is a huge need for improvement in this area.

What are your postgraduate goals/plans?

After completing my Master of Public Health in May, I will start training to become a paramedic. I am working towards becoming a Firefighter/Paramedic. I look forward to integrating on-the-ground work experience with my public health knowledge to pursue grants and policy change in the community I will work with.

Why Providence?

Providence is a small but mighty city. The small size of Providence allows students to network inside and outside of academic spaces. There are opportunities for every interest in this small city. I also LOVE Autumn in Providence because there are so many nearby places to sightsee.

What advice would you give to a prospective applicant?

Be yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions! There is no one student at Brown SPH who is the same as another. Every person is beautifully unique and brings their own set of strengths. There are so many people at Brown SPH who would love to answer any questions you may have!
