Biography

Why did you choose the Brown University School of Public Health?

I chose to attend Brown for my MPH because I am deeply impressed by the curriculum, faculty, welcoming culture, and opportunities for academic and professional growth. There is no shortage of talented classmates to connect with and faculty and staff truly support the needs and wellbeing of students.

What makes Brown's program different from other programs you considered?

I am currently part of the Online MPH (OMPH) program at Brown designed for fully-employed professionals. I was drawn to the program by its versatile curriculum covering a wide breadth of public health knowledge and skills, flexibility that allows balance with professional and personal commitments, and the reputation of Brown's world-renown public health school.

What do you enjoy most about your program?

I appreciate the multimodal approach to learning in the Brown OMPH program. The curriculum integrates discussion-based synchronous sessions, readings, videos, interactive, and case-based assignments effectively to help deliver concepts in an engaging and diverse manner.

What is your academic area of interest and why?

My academic area of interest is Health Policy and Management, specifically value-based insurance design and increasing quality and access to preventive health care services for BIPOC and immigrant patients.

What are your postgraduate goals/plans?

My postgraduate aspiration is to seek a professional opportunity at a nongovernmental local or global public health organization, governmental agency, or biotech company or consulting firm focused on addressing health inequities and improving healthcare access and delivery through DHEI promotion, health policy analysis, and mixed methods research. I eventually plan on pursuing a fully-employed MBA and PhD in Health Policy and Management.

Why Providence?

Although I currently live and work in Boston, I love to visit Providence to immerse myself in the campus atmosphere at Brown and to experience a place that combines small town friendliness with the sophistication of a big city. Providence is a diverse and growing city with a multitude of educational and professional development opportunities and fun activities to engage in.

What advice would you give to a prospective applicant?

Tell your unique personal story, including accomplishments and adversities. Your achievements in and beyond the realm of public health have surely been gratifying, but highlighting your trials and tribulations affords you an opportunity to showcase your resilience and determination. I have always believed that we either succeed or we learn. Don't be afraid to capture your learning moments throughout your journey.
