Biography

Why did you choose the Brown University School of Public Health?

I chose Brown University School of Public Health because there is a true sense of community here, aside from the world-class faculty and academics.

What makes Brown's program different from other programs you considered?

Brown’s program is difference from other programs in many ways. The doctoral cohorts are small which fosters relationships between students and allows for faculty to know you on a personal level. Doctoral students are doing amazing work across disciplines. There is never a sense of competition among students only that of support and encouragement for each other’s success.

What do you enjoy most about your program?

There are many aspects that I enjoy about the Epidemiology program, but what I appreciate most is feeling like I have a seat at the table. The faculty and staff value student input and take stock in our ideas and opinions. Here you feel like a colleague and not just a student.

What is your academic area of interest and why?

My research interest is focused on infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries. I have a particular interest in the intersection of TB and nutrition, especially among children. Undernutrition is a leading, modifiable risk factor for TB, yet nutritional support is undervalued as part of the care continuum.

What are your postgraduate goals/plans?

My postgraduate plan is to complete a postdoctoral fellowship. My long-term goal is to balance a career of teaching and research.

Why Providence?

Providence is charming. There are boutiques and cafés scattered across the city. The art scene and antiquing opportunities are fantastic as well. Lastly, if you are a foodie, there is GREAT food everywhere.

What advice would you give to a prospective applicant?

Reach out to faculty and students. Making connections with faculty can ensure your interests align with the department while connecting with current students can help determine if this is the environment for you. Whatever program you become a part of, make sure you see yourself fitting into the community. Choosing a doctoral program is big commitment – stay true to yourself and have fun throughout the process!
