Application Materials Explained

Official domestic and international transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work must be submitted directly to SOPHAS by the program's application deadline.

The GRE is required only for applicants to the Ph.D. in Biostatistics program.  It is not required for all other programs.  The GRE code for the Brown University School of Public Health is 7765.

Resume or CV should be submitted directly to SOPHAS.

Your statement should be original and specific to the program you are applying to.  It is an opportunity to share a thoughtful, well-crafted narrative that highlights your academic background, relevant experiences, and professional goals.  We encourage you to explain your interest in the chosen program and why the Brown University School of Public Health is the right place to pursue your aspirations.

All international applicants whose native language is not English must submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score.  Language proficiency exams are not required of those students whose native language is English, or have earned a degree from a non-U.S. university where the primary language of instruction is English, or from a college or university in the United States.

  • TOEFL scores must be sent to SOPHAS (code: 5688) and Brown Graduate School (code: 3094).
  • IELTS scores must be sent electronically to "Brown University Graduate School" via the IELTS portal. Self-report your scores and TRF number in SOPHAS.

For the Master’s and Ph.D. in Biostatistics program, one semester each of multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and calculus-based probability is required.  Two to three semesters of calculus and experience with numerical computing are recommended. These requirements do not apply to other programs.

The Online MPH requires a minimum of 2 years of work experience to apply, and the Online Master’s in Biostatistics requires at least 1 year. There is no work experience requirement for other programs.

Applicants to the AMPH program must have an advanced clinical degree (e.g., M.D., Ph.D., DO, PharmD, DDS, DMD, OD, DVM, DNP, DPT, or an international equivalent), or be a medical student who has completed at least two years of medical school. This requirement does not apply to other programs.
